The commercial market for infrared imaging and sensing products has grown tremendously in recent years especially with the advent of low-cost and rugged Si-substrates for HgCdTe. Applications are being developed for homeland security, law enforcement, fire fighting, oil and gas exploration, CO2 monitoring, aircraft ice detection, medicine, biology, chemistry, environmental science, and process and quality control. Cost reduction of high-performance infrared sensors presents new opportunities for infrared imaging to be incorporated into machine vision and widespread commercial use.
