Infrared imaging is a critical technological resource for the military. Infrared sensors and materials are used in a range of devices for defense applications from surveillance and reconnaissance to stand-off chemical and biological agent detection and explosive detection. HgCdTe-based detectors are commonly used by the US military in numerous critical systems including the Black Hawk and Apache helicopters, Abrams tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles.
